THE REASONING BEHIND OUR BUILD GUIDES

Roverzandum is an independent publication for people who build and maintain their own travel vehicles. We write about the parts of overland travel that decide whether a trip works: weight, access, energy, water and distance from help.

Why journeys come first

Too much overland content starts with accessories. We start with the journey and its service gaps, because those decide what the vehicle must carry and fix on its own. A build that suits the Pan-American Highway may be wrong for a Mongolian winter or a Saharan crossing.

We treat storage, sleeping, power and route planning as one system sharing one payload. Changing one always affects the others.

Editorial principles

  • 1

    Limits stated plainly

Weight ratings, roof loads and battery temperature limits come before features.

  • 2

    Maintainability

We favour systems you can inspect, repair and replace with tools you carry.

  • 3

    Professional input

We flag work that needs qualified installers and inspection, and we do not publish wiring or gas diagrams as DIY instructions.

  • 4

    No paid placement

We do not accept payment to feature products. Brand names appear only as examples.

How we source information

Our guides draw on vehicle manufacturer handbooks, published standards such as BS EN 1648-1 and BS 7671, park and road authority guidance, and long-established references including Tom Sheppard's Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide and Chris Scott's Sahara Overland. Practical detail comes from our own builds and from conversations with auto electricians, fabricators and travellers.

Rules and road conditions change. If you spot something out of date, please tell us and we will review it.
