FAQ

BEFORE YOU DRILL OR DEPART

Short, practical answers to the questions we hear most from self-builders and long-distance travellers. Each links to the full guide.

Build questions

How much weight can I add to my vehicle?

Weigh the vehicle with full fuel and all occupants, then subtract that from the plated gross vehicle mass. The remainder is your allowance for the build, water and gear. Check individual axle limits as well. Conversion guide

Can I fit a rooftop tent to any vehicle?

Only if the combined weight of rack and tent stays within the vehicle's dynamic roof load and the rack's own rating. Use the lower figure. Camp systems

Which jobs should a professional do?

Seat and seat belt changes, structural cutting, LPG installations, mains electrics and final connection of high-current DC systems should involve qualified professionals and any required inspection.

How do I stop condensation?

Ventilate continuously, insulate cold metal surfaces, use an anti-condensation mat under mattresses and avoid unvented combustion heaters.

Mark structure, cables and fuel lines before any hole is drilled.

Power questions

Do I need lithium batteries?

Not necessarily. LiFePO4 saves weight and handles deep cycling, but it needs compatible chargers and usually cannot be charged below about 0 °C without protection. Start with an energy audit. Power guide

How much solar do I need?

Divide your daily watt-hour demand by realistic peak sun hours for the season and location, then add margin for losses and shade. Many builds also rely on DC-DC charging while driving.

Route questions

How much water should I carry?

Plan at least 5 litres per person per day for drinking in hot conditions, plus cooking and washing, and keep a reserve for unexpected delays. Route prep

Is a winch essential?

No. Traction boards, a shovel, tyre deflation and training solve most situations. A winch adds weight and requires proper mounting and training.

Do I need a Carnet de Passages?

Some countries require one for temporary vehicle import. Check current rules for each border with the relevant national motoring organisation before departure.
